City Council Candidates Aligned to Repeal the Summit Avenue Regional Trail Plan

    Saint Paul –

Seven Candidates for St. Paul City Council, one from each ward, held a news conference on Tuesday October 24th at NOON at Cochran Park on Western and Summit in Saint Paul. There the candidates pledged to Repeal the Summit Avenue Regional Trail passed by the City Council on May 24, 2023, as there first act upon being duly seated on the council.

Robert Bushard of Ward 4, organizer of the event said “The Summit Ave Regional Trail Plan is predicted on the false assumption that ‘Summit Ave needs to be reconstructed anyway, because the infrastructure is 100 years old’.

The storm sewers were separated from waste sewers in the 90’s as a result of lawsuits brought by cities downstream receiving raw sewage during heavy rain storms.  The water utility wants to replace lead feed lines with copper and that can be done without open trenches or tree damage, but is that even necessary.

Electrical and other upgrades if needed can be accomplished as is being done on Cleveland in the first weeks of October. There, 20 foot pipes meant to carry electrical wire are driven underground for the entire block, making one long pipe or raceway.”

The infrastructure is not broken and does not need repair or replacement that requires destroying the Avenue and up to 950 trees.

    About the Aligned Candidates

The candidates are a mix of partisans and non-partisans who agree the Summit Avenue Regional Trail Plan must be repealed.

  • Robert Bushard Profile

I am Robert Bushard and I am running for St. Paul City Council in Ward 4.

When elected I will advocate for families. I will support single family homeownership, crime prevention, lower taxes, limit spending, limit rezoning and work to eliminate RCV in our elections.

I am a life long Merriam Park resident, living within two blocks of my Mother’s childhood home and four blocks from my own childhood home. I have been around the world, but never got off the block.

I graduated from St. Mark’s Catholic Grade School then, St. Paul Central High School, in 1965. I joined the US Air Force where I learned electronics and was given a Secret Clearance. I was trained on secret communications equipment and after a year on a remote mountain top on a Greek Island, I was given my choice of assignments. But this equipment was needed in Vietnam, so I volunteered serving 9 months on the DMZ at Dong Ha (Waterboy) in 1968.

After my service, I built Command, Control and Communications computers for Poseidon submarines at Sperry Univac. My career in the computer industry with various local companies, led to traveling all over the US and Europe, installing equipment. I finished my career in the banking world and retired October 31st, 2020.

In my travels, I learned Merriam Park is the best place to live in the world. My brother tells me to leave crime ridden St. Paul. Getting carjacked on Valentines Day and garage broken into in October of 2020, crime just seems to be getting a little close to home.

I am not running from my home. I am running for St. Paul City Council in Ward 4.

  • Who Is An Election Denier?

In 2000, Al Gore did not accept the results of the Florida popular vote and spent five weeks fighting the outcome in courts, where the issue was settled by the Supreme Court.

In 2004, attempting flip that election to John Kerry, 32 Democrats, including Senator Barbara Boxer of California, voted not to certify the outcome of the 2004 Ohio election.

In 2016, Hillary Clinton, alleged Trump ‘colluded’ with Russia to rig the election.

Securing our elections by adding watermarks, security strips and serial numbers would go a long way in removing the election result questions that tear at the fabric of our nation.

  • Crime

Since the riots protesting the death of a career criminal, I have lost 5 neighbors who fled the Merriam Park neighborhood in fear of the crime wave. I believe another just moved due to the six gunshots at 2:30 am in early October.

In the summer of 2020 , on the southeast corner of I94 and Cleveland there was a homeless camp in the shrubs between the cyclone fence and Noise abatement wall. Every morning I would find, on average, 20 needles in the street.

I borrowed a generator and an electric hack saw and, with a friend, cut the cyclone fence down, then swung it over to the noise abatement wall. Next I cleared out the camp, shrubs and weed trees, brought in dirt and seeded the area.

No more camp. No more needles in the street.

in 2022 on Valentine’s Day I was car jacked and on October 24 at 10:00 am I opened my garage door to find a criminal in the garage. He was attempting to steal items from my garage after he had broken in the service door. I gave chase, the police caught him and he landed in jail for two days.

My brother tells me to get out of St. Paul.

We ran from Saigon. We ran from Benghazi. We ran from Kabul.

I am not running from my home! I am running for Ward 4!

  • The DFL calls for “Fully Funding Education”

Does this mean funding for forcing 11 year old children to be exposed to LGBTQI+ in the classroom for an hour? Nothing happens in school without funding which beg the questions, who is funding LGBTQI+ Hour in public schools and for what purpose?

Would the purpose of LGBTQI+ Hour be inclusion? The inclusion of children of Christians, Moslems and Jews into the LGBTQI+ community against their wishes and without the knowledge or approval of their parents?

How do programs like this help children learn reading, writing and math at grade level? How do these programs prepare children to succeed in life.

Teachers who have left the field have expressed frustration that those ever expanding funding dollars never reach the teachers or children.

The need for transparency and accountability is great and parents have every right to know what is being taught to their children.
